Best time to visit the Ourika Valley
Season by season
| Season | What to expect | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | Higher water from snowmelt, green hillsides | Described by one source as the most rewarding |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | Cooler than Marrakech, crowded at weekends, lower water | Go early; thunderstorms at altitude can occur |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | Calmer, similar to spring but the river runs lower | Saffron flowers from about 21 Oct to 30 Nov |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | Quiet and cold, ice risk on exposed upper sections | Flooding risk after heavy rain, according to one guide from November to March |
Seasonal notes come from Nomado Travel, Best Life Morocco and Vanupied. None gives measured water-flow data.
Time of day
One source says the valley is quiet by 9 a.m. on weekdays and that by noon in summer the lower path fills with tour groups and the cafés are full. Starting early gives you the cooler hours and quieter paths.
Heat and the escape from Marrakech
French guides describe the valley as 10–15 °C cooler than central Marrakech, which is why many people go in summer. It is still hot at midday, so bring water and sun protection.
Snow and Oukaïmeden
The road to the Oukaïmeden ski station runs through the valley (Vanupied). Whether there is snow depends on the winter. We do not publish a ski-season calendar, so check conditions before planning a trip there.
Check the forecast
In any season, look at the weather before you go. Storms at altitude can raise the river quickly, which is the main risk to avoid.
